![]() He also shows this vulnerability to Monty. When he's distressed or angry, he's still nasal and dorky, but you can hear his vulnerabilities in his voice more-guilt, resentment towards Grandfather, distress at what happens if Grandfather wins, rage-but because he wants to help Monty and the DC don't initially want to help Monty-interestingly he shows this vulnerability to the DCFDTL. He's more nasal when he's being sarcastic, cruel, or when he's whining in his kid way, when he's putting on his 50s evil dad persona, which he even does without the shadows, and when he expresses admiration for Grandfather being evil. Also, he says to Grandfather "And I'm pretty evil! I reek of evil!" In conclusion, it's unusual for an extremely nasal, hilarious character, so often used only to be annoying and/or pretentious, to not be used as a comic foil or purely comic relief, but Benedict is a surprisingly dramatic villain/anti-hero.Ī further level is that Benedict's nasal-ness varies with his mood or the persona he's projecting. ![]() ![]() Also, he likes being evil for evil's sake-which he indicates when he expresses admiration for Grandfather being evil. As for wanting to control the world, Benedict was stomped on too much for him not to want to take over the world, so that's actually one of his not-as-evil traits. His most evil is the Delightfulization and the happiness he derives from malice. We know he's seeking Grandfather's affection and respect that he's never gonna get, he causes fear/gains respect from other villains and the kids with his shadows and fire, and yes, also is just genuinely evil-even when shadow-less, because he's maliciously gleeful about the Delightfulization of Sector Z, and because if the Delightful Children like being feared by the other kids, he likes being feared by everyone. I infer that the fear of being nothing also drives his wanting to take over the world, and not just the unreflective desire to succeed Grandfather because he's his son. The underlying darkness in him fully comes out when he's monologuing about the Delightfulization Chamber, control of the world, and also when he fears that he'll be nothing if Grandfather succeeds. We don't see this when he's a kid, as he's sad, fearful, and timid all the time rather than showing any serious anger, but as an adult he has an underlying darkness in his voice the whole time, except for when he's trying to impress Grandfather, and taking Grandfather's abuse, where he becomes thoroughly absurd and comical. His voice is so wonderfully nerdy and nasal-but with some interesting nuance-we're given the feeling that Ben's the nerd who no one takes seriously, and he builds up resentment. It is an undersea version of the Candy Barrel with an undersea version of Peppermint Larry. As I've said before, I like Jeff Bennett's performance as Father's unshadowed form. It is almost exactly like the Candy Barrel, except it is filled with violent sailors and in horrible shape The main difference between The Candy Hydrant and the Candy Barrel is that the Candy Hydrant serves dog food instead of candy.
